How To Recolor A Subway Art Image

It was fun to read all of your favorite spring words and colors, thanks for all of your suggestions, it really helped me!  As I read through them all though, I realized that there was no way that I'd be able to make prints in all of your favorite colors.  So instead, I'm going to show you how to change the colors of the subway art so you can print them in whatever color you want.  It's really quite easy to do too!

Will you believe that you can get this image:

From this?

It took only a few minutes to first change it to look like the image below.

For the image above, I changed the color of the image first, then clicked on the background and made it transparent.  Then you can either click on the fill icon and fill it with color, or insert a rectangle from AutoShapes into the document, fill it with color, and place it behind the words.  You can learn everything that you need to know to do this in the information in this post.

For the next image, I added a digital scrapbook paper behind the image and then downsized the words to show a border.

Just follow the steps below for the program that you have.  The new birthday subway art prints that I made are saved at high resolution if you'd like to use them.

In paint not only can you change a solid colored background, but you can change each word to a different color if you'd like as well.  As far as I know, you can only recolor solid colors in paint.  A patterned paper would not be easy to change.  If you have an image with a patterned paper, color the paper in another program and then copy and paste the image into Paint if you want to make the words different colors.  When you're done editing it in Paint, click on select all, then copy, and paste it into a document where you can size and print it.

How to change the colors of an image in Microsoft Publisher
Publisher is what I use to make the prints.  Photo shop is on my wish list. :)  In Publisher, when you change the image color, it will be monochromatic.  If you start with a medium shade, you can go lighter when you recolor, but not a whole lot darker in shade.  Also, you're not able to change individual words to different colors, you'd have to copy and past it into Paint to do it.
To recolor an image:
1.  Right click on the image
2.  Select 'format picture'
3.  Click on recolor
4.  Select the color that you want to color it in.  You can choose your own color and shade by clicking on 'more colors'.  Click on the color you want to use.
5.  Click on 'apply' (if you need to go back to the original color of the image, click on 'restore original colors)
6.  If the image is the color that you want, click on 'ok', and then on 'ok' again and it's your new color.
I don't know if this tutorial is accurate (since I don't have this program), I hope it is!  I'll check into it.
Click on the link and then scroll down to where it says 'Recolor a picture' and read that section.
or
1. Right click on the image, it will say 'format picture' in your tool bar.
2.  Click on 'recolor' in the tool bar.
3.  You can either choose a shade already provided, or click on 'more variations' to choose your own color.
***How to change the color of the words and insert a digital scrapbook image for the background (in Microsoft Publisher, and Word)

1.  Insert one of the subway art images with black words on a white background into a document.
2.  Recolor the image following the steps above.
3.  Click on the 'set transparent color' icon in your tool bar and then click on the background of the image.  It will become transparent.
4.  Choose your digital paper and place it behind the words and size it.
Feel free to change the colors on any of my subway art prints.
I ask that you continue to print them for personal use only and that you not repost them on your website.

Knowing how to recolor an image will open up so many possibilities.  You can design the prints to fit your own personalities and home decor by adding your favorite digital scrapbook paper.  I think you'll see why I've had such a hard time narrowing down the number of prints that I post too. :)

Subway Art Gum Wrappers

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Are you remembering to wear green today?  Wouldn't want you to get pinched or anything. :)

I was actually searching the internet for printable St. Patrick's Day gum wrappers with no success (it was a long shot I know), when I had one of those 'duh' moments and thought to do this...

 Subway Art Gum Wrappers!

My daughter took these to share with her class today for their little St. Patrick's Day celebration.

By luck, it all went together perfectly.  Even down to the skinny words on the sides of the gum!

You can print the Gum Wrappers here.

Any of the subway art designs could be used for gum wrappers, just size them to fit the gum.

Now...you know that I realize that you can't all win, so I spent some time and designed a bonus subway art print with a Birthday theme as a small gift--just for those of you who read my blog.
(This has been the most requested theme.)

Ideas for how you could use the Birthday Subway Art:
  • as a birthday card
  • as an invitation-you can fit 2-4x5 prints on an 8x10 sheet of photo paper (check your dollar store--8 sheets for $1), print them on the right side of the paper (hot dog style) and then cut (hamburger style) and fold them in half for cards/invitations
  • as a birthday countdown--frame the print and then use a dry erase marker to write the countdown numbers on the glass over the center balloon each day (works okay), or laminate it and write on the lamination
  • if you know how to edit images you can insert a filled box over the balloons to hide them, and then add the month and day of the birthday (I like to use a stencil font for the numbers.)
  • put picture of the birthday girl/boy in the center over the balloons and frame it, to honor them during a party or for their special day
  • print them small, attach them to a pick and put them on a cupcake

For Personal Use Only
Please don't post these images on your website, thanks.
You are more than welcome to use the picture above :)

(You can print the black and white images onto colored paper, or scrapbook paper with a simple pattern.)

To download: You must first click on the image to open it in a new window in it's highest resolution.  Right click on the image and either copy and paste it into a document (to size and then print), or click on save image as to save it to your computer.  You will need to size it before you print.
To size the prints:   The prints look will look the best printed as an 8x10 or 4"x5" (for a card), but can be stretched to other sizes if you insert them into a document using a program like Microsoft Word/Publisher or Photo shop.  Insert the image, click on it, then drag the sides of the image to the size that you want.  (A 5x7 will look slightly stretched vertically, but still looks good.)
Thanks again and don't forget to enter the giveaway! (now closed)

Featuring: Printable Children's Activity Packet (FREE!)

Alison at Oopsey Daisy put together a Mommy School Packet for young children that is full of activities for learning.  My son and I sat down yesterday and did several of the activities together and he really had fun with them.  I know from experience that she must have spent hours and hours gathering activities, adding clip-art, and organizing this packet, yet she is generously offering it for free!  It has printable activity pages as well as many suggestions for hands-on activities that you can do together with your children.

My thanks to Alison for making and sharing this fun packet for us to use and enjoy!

Printable Quote

Recently a reader e-mailed me and mentioned that she'll be having a bone marrow transplant within the month and would like to have something in her hospital room that would help her to remain cheerful during this time.  She mentioned her favorite quote and that she'd love it if I ever decided to make it into a printable.   I knew immediately that making a printable was one small thing that I could do for her, to help her through this time, as well as for any of you who are experiencing 'rough waters'.

Her favorite quote is:
"We have no control of the winds in adverse situations,
but we can adjust our sails.

So what happens when I have two different ideas for the design and the two people I ask for opinions each like a different one?  Why, I post them both and let YOU decide...that's what I do. :)

Print this image onto colored paper, or scrapbook paper with a simple print.

Print this image onto colored paper or scrapbook paper with a simple print.

Edited to add: Revised 'a' Version
(I did a bit of cutting and pasting and fixed the 'a' in sail so it doesn't look like a 'q'.)

To Download the prints:

1.  Click on the image--this is important, it will open the image in a new window at it's fullest resolution.

2.  Either right click on the image and choose 'save image as' to save it to your computer, or click on 'copy' to copy and paste it into a document, like Microsoft Publisher/Word, or another similar program.

3.  If you past it into a document, you will need to size the image before you print it.  Just click on the image and drag it over to the ruler bar then click your mouse on one edge of the picture.  While holding down the button, move your mouse to enlarge/reduce the size of the picture.  Drag it vertically and horizontally to the size that you want it.  The words in some sizes may appear slightly stretched.  This quote will look the best as an 8x10.

4.  Center the image on the document page and print.

There is so much truth to this quote.  Sometimes life sends us in directions that we don't expect, but we can choose to do our best to keep our spirits high and just 'keep sailing'.

St. Patricks Day Subway Art Prints

Top of the mornin' to ya!
For me, the main goal on St. Patrick's Day, while attending Elementary School, was to make it through the day without getting pinched.  You too?  It's a rather crazy tradition to keep, that if you are caught not wearing green another person has the right to pinch you.  However, if they pinch you and you are wearing green, you get to pinch them back 10 times.

Curious how this tradition of pinching began,  I ran a few searches and got several different answers ranging from warding off Leprechauns to just a child's made-up game.  If you know the real history (or have a good guess) of how it all started please enlighten me!  Also, for those of you living outside of the U.S., do children pinch on St. Patrick's Day where you live, or is this unique to the U.S.?  I'd love to hear about how/if you celebrate St. Patrick's day! :)

This print is designed with words that children may typically associate with St. Patrick's Day...including pinching!
(The prints shown below are 5x7's.  The print in the bottom left corner is printed on scrapbook paper.)

Now what would a post about St. Patrick's Day be without music from Celtic Woman?  Love, love, love them!  Enjoy their contagious energy as you choose your favorite print.  Bet you dance in your chair!  Bet you're humming the song later. :)

(Updated, sorry, the video is no longer available.)

If you're hooked now and want to hear more, click here to link to Celtic Womans' YouTube Channel.
